How much, or little, have things changed for closeted gay celebrities?

A firestorm was recently ignited in the media due to an opinion piece in The New York Times speculating about the sexuality of pop music sensation Taylor Swift. I had read about and heard rumors about Swift for awhile but never had they reached the kind of cultural reach as the pages of “the Gray Lady”. For whatever reason the NYT has decided in recent years to take a much more bold stance in favor of discussing the personal lives of major figures. They also famously posthumously outed former New York City Mayor Ed Koch several years ago, something that they never dared to do back when Koch was alive and serving as Mayor, even though there was rampant gossiping about it at the time.
